Malahat SkyWalk, BC’s internationally renowned tourism attraction, is excited to announce the upcoming launch of The Overhang – the first enclosed glass cube in the world to be attached to the top of a spiral tower, and the only one of its kind in Canada. Officially opening on the Victoria Day long weekend (May 16-18), this new and exhilarating adventure will offer equal parts thrills and wonder with a viewpoint to match.
Suspended 250 metres (820ft) above sea level, the Skywalk’s newest innovation will extend 2.13 metres (7ft) beyond the summit edge of the architecturally stunning 10-storey Spiral Tower. Designed with thrill-seekers in mind, The Overhang promises to deliver an unmistakable rush from the very first step. The transparent glass cube, only inches thick, will create the illusion of defying gravity. Hearts will race as visitors experience the feeling of floating mid-air, high in the sky with nothing between them and the dramatic West Coast landscape, all around. Strategically placed to take advantage of some of the best scenery in the world, including the lush coastal rainforest, shimmering Pacific waters, and majestic mountain ranges, this new experience is set to become Vancouver Island’s most epic lookout.
“It’s an exciting year for Malahat SkyWalk as we prepare to celebrate our fifth anniversary, welcome our one millionth guest, and launch The Overhang, our most significant innovation since opening,” says Nathan Bird, General Manager of Malahat SkyWalk. “This latest offering further elevates our award-winning brand as a premier nature and adventure attraction, while setting the stage for more thrill-seeking experiences in the near future.”
The Overhang will be custom-built with the highest standards of both strength and safety. Measuring 2.13 metres (7ft) all around, it will be constructed with a steel support frame and five panels of structural glass. The sides and ceiling will be 36 mm (1.42in) thick, with a base of 60 mm (2.36in). Each panel will be made up of multiple layers (three on the walls and five on the floor) of glass that have been bound together.
This new experience has been developed by Aspect, a leading structural engineering firm, based in BC and responsible for the unique corkscrew design of the SkyWalk’s Spiral Tower. The Overhang has been designed to be fully accessible so that all visitors can enjoy this unique adventure experience together.
