How to prep for your summer road trip

If the thought of hitting the open road this summer has been on your mind, you are not alone. It’s no surprise Canadians love a good summer road trip, but this year getting behind the wheel is going to be a reality for more people than ever before.

In a recent survey by Léger, in collaboration with the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS), only 22 per cent of Canadians said they would feel comfortable travelling on an airplane* and with travel restrictions still in place across the world, many of us are pivoting our travel plans to explore the beautiful landscape that’s in our backyard.

OK Tire wants to help in making this summer road trip unforgettable for all the right reasons. Before you set out there are a few things you need to do to prep to save you time and money.

  1. Plan ahead – While having a plan in place is always important many businesses and attractions continue to work on reduced hours, reduced capacity or are closed altogether due to the pandemic. Make accommodation reservations in advance and plan your route and stops to avoid disappointment.
  2. Pack an emergency kit –  Your kit should include non-perishable food and bottled water, washer fluid, a spare tire, jumper cables, jack and tool kit, first aid supplies, flares, candles and matches or a lighter, flashlight, batteries, and your cell phone charger. Keeping this small yet crucial kit with you could seriously avoid roadside disaster.
  3. Before you leave for a road trip, have a certified auto technician check your car’s brakes, fluid levels, tires, and anything else that has you concerned. Making sure you have jumper cables on board and that your spare tire is inflated will also be crucial in case of an emergency.
