Sonya Winner Rug Studio is thrilled to unveil the Mexico Collection, a striking series of hand-tufted rugs and runners inspired by the vibrant visual language of Mexican modernism.
The collection debuts with two bold designs, Barragán Pool and Mexico Sunlight which translate architecture, colour theory and tonal layering into tactile works of art for the floor.
Barragán Pool

Inspired by the luminous stillness of the indoor pool at Barragán’s Casa Gilardi, this design reflects the architect’s use of geometry, colour, and light to evoke mood and meaning. Bold yet meditative, the rug captures Barragán’s distinct visual language, balancing geometry with atmospheric richness. With subtle references to Barragán’s close friend and fellow colour pioneer, Josef Albers, Sonya introduces a rhythm of nested shapes and layered tones to the composition, creating a dialogue between architectural space and abstract form.
Mexico Sunlight

A radiant tribute to the shared sensibilities of Albers and Barragán, Mexico Sunlight draws directly on Albers’ iconic Homage to the Square series which explores colour as experience through layered tonal fields and finely balanced gradients. At the same time, the rug captures the intangible magic of light shifting across Barragán’s vividly coloured interiors, something Sonya experienced firsthand while visiting several of his Mexico City homes. The design reflects both the analytical and the emotional – Albers’ precision and Barragán’s warmth – merging them into a single, immersive composition that flows with movement and harmony.
