Heron Rock Bistro… not once but twice!

Located just behind the Starbucks it the heart of James Bay village, Heron Rock Bistro is located at Unit 4 – 435 Simcoe Street. It’s streetscape is fairly unassuming and if you didn’t know it was there, you might miss it – so keep your eyes peeled… or just follow your nose!

Our sister publication, NICHE magazine took a group of high spirited ladies to Heron Rock Bistro for NICHE Night Out. It was a busy night, and the dining crew did a good job keeping up with our large group of 38 women! That night, they are giggling group mini slider burgers, oysters on the half shell, and exceptional duck confit poutine.

Once the dust settled, I decided to take a second look (and taste) at this hidden gem in James Bay, and experience their almost famous Sunday brunch. I was so glad I went back!

We went for Sunday brunch, and the “Hollandaise from Heaven” that was boldly imprinted on their website and menu, did NOT disappoint. It was homemade hash, topped with generous sized poached free-run eggs (I asked for soft and they were perfectly cooked), smothered in hollandaise sauce & served with toast.

Do not leave without trying the Benny Trio either! In my job, I visit a lot of restaurants, and review a lot of different food. Along with my husband or table mates, we often order different dishes, and then everyone samples from what’s on the table – it’s a great way to get a taste of everything and really experience what a restaurant has to offer.

If you are more of a lunch crowd, try the Pulled Pork Poutine or classic French Onion Soup. If you arrive later, in time for dinner, I am told by Heron Rock fans that the oysters, po’ boys and NY Steak Frites are pretty darned good.

Definitely a bit of a secret in Victoria, Heron Rock Bistro is small, friendly and definitely yummy enough for a spot on my Sunday brunch list of favourites in Victoria!
