Indigenous Gifts to Share this Festive Season

516

With cooler temps on the way and holiday season just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about unique and thoughtful gift ideas to share with our loved ones.

Brenda Baptiste, Chair of Indigenous Tourism British Columbia (ITBC), urges us to further our education and understanding of First Nations by supporting Indigenous creators, makers and artisans this festive season.

“The festive winter season is a wonderful time to gather with beloved friends, families, colleagues and more. As we look to show our appreciation for others through gifting, it is also an important time to consider how we can contribute to reconciliation through gifting educational experiences and presents with a special meaning, history and culture tied to it,” says Baptiste. Here are some of ITBC’s suggestions for thoughtful gifts this season:

Expand your Palate

Award-winning Wine from Nk’Mip Cellars (Osoyoos, BC)
A five-hour drive east of Vancouver, Nk’Mip Cellars is the first Indigenous-owned winery in North America, expressing its culture and authenticity through wine. Discover their internationally award-winning wines with the private Grotto Tasting experience while soaking in the skyline of Osoyoos. Including a private vineyard tour and a unique selection of five library wines from the award-winning Qwan Qwmt and Mer’r’yim series, it’s the perfect experience for a gourmet palate. Starting from $75.

Spirit Bear Coffee Company
(Coquitlam, BC)

Inspired by the origins of the Raven and the Spirit Bear, the Indigenous-owned and operated coffee company is known for its certified organic and fair trade beans. For those who like a bold, rich and balanced coffee, the Raven Espresso is the ideal choice. For the coffee-lover cutting back on caffeine, the Dolphin SWP Decaf is a smooth, full-bodied coffee with beans from Eastern Asia and Latin America. Starting from $18.49, available in 400g / 1kg bags.

Salmon N’ Bannock
(Vancouver, BC)

Salmon N’ Bannock embraces tradition and uses authentic flavors to create a delicious, modern take on Indigenous cuisine, by using locally-sourced ingredients and recipes passed down through generations. Their signature bannock is a staple year-round and can be ordered alongside main dishes, including bison pot roast or “feel the beat” power salad. Guests who want a little of everything can enjoy a salmon and game sampler for a genuinely spectacular feast. Available for dine in or delivery, the popular samplers start from $20.
